Remy’s recovery

Hi Everyone,

“It’s me Remy, the new Tripawd! I am starting to feel more like myself again. I do like to nap, a lot, but if there is food around,  I’m up and hopping over to it. Heck, I am a Lab! I go outside again in the yard by myself and have jumped up to my favorite spot on the couch. Still sporting these staple and stitches, but only a few more days mommer’s says. Speaking of mummer’s, she worries a lot. Always doting on me, giving me the yummy pill pockets. She thinks I don’t know that there are pills in there, but I am pretty smart. She stays home with me everyday! Geez, what’s a guy to do? But she loves me and I love her. It’s all good.”

Mummer’s here. Yes, I am doting on him and yet trying to let him do as much as he can. We are only 10 days post-surgery and I’ve already called a canine physical therapist to see what they suggest for keeping him strong and active. Any advice on that and a harness would be so welcome. It is his left front leg that was amputated, but Remy also has some arthritis in his back hip/legs so I do worry about it.

Did anyone change their dog’s diet after the cancer diagnosis? I’m trying to read everything but there is so much to get through. We are doing the cool laser treatments a few times each week at our Vet’s office.

So if anyone reading this can provide some advice, I would truly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Mommers (Lynn)

I am a dog lover and have been involved with Lab rescue and shelter work for many years. A few years ago I became a Professional Certified Dog Trainer and left the corporate world job behind me. I love working with dogs and their owners. Two weeks ago we found out that our Remy, our 8 year old black lab had Osteosarcoma in his left front leg. It was amputated on Friday, 11/16. Today is Day 4 and he has been up and hopping around. We are reading everything we can about cancer on the cancer dog blog and loving the inspirational stories here on Tripawds. We also have a 7 year old Australian Shepherd that we adopted a year ago. His name is Freddy. And we have Chico, our 30+ year old African Grey Parrot. We are finding the cup half full, not half empty. Ready to kick Remy's cancer to the gutter.

  1. Lynn, it’s so good to know Remy is rockin’ recovery! That’s wonderful! Sounds like a Labbie, and I have no doubt that he’ll be back to his usual farm field rolling and romping in no time at all.

Regarding harnesses and nutrition. Have you hopped over to the Tripawds Gear Blog and Tripawds Nutrition Blog? We have lots of great tips there that can help guide you, as well as our Discussion Forums.

Keep in mind that works best for one dog may be different for others. Talk to the community and ask all the questions you want, you’ll find exactly what Remy needs once you weigh all the feedback.

Glad to see the terrific pupdate! Got any more pics of your handsome boy?

  2. Our furbabies can smell so much better than humans, so here’s a helpful hint on medication: Use only 1 hand to handle medication to place in pill pocket & use same hand to seal/pinch pill pocket closed. Wash both hands really well, then you can touch pill pocket to offer. For TrikieLuv, I even resorted to wearing disposable gloves when I was handling her meds 😱. There are YouTube videos out there that show & explain this better.
    TrikieLuv’s friends included Labs.
Remy is a great looking guy.
